Farm Policy Researcher (Business Risk Management & Taxation Policy)The Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) is a dynamic organization representing the interests of over 36,000 Ontario farms.The OFA is currently seeking a Farm Policy Researcher to join the OFAs Farm Policy Research Group. This group is responsible for providing background and analysis on government programs and policies of relevance to the farming community.The Role: This permanent full-time position will be based at OFAs head office in Guelph, Ontario. The budgeted salary for this position is $50,000 per annum. Some travel within Ontario will be required. In this role, the successful candidate will:

  • Identify, evaluate and monitor business risk management (BRM) programs and tax policies of relevance to Ontario farmers;
  • Analyze existing and proposed agricultural policies from an economic/business perspective to assist OFAs Board of Directors to set sound policy positions;
  • Prepare and present background and policy alternatives on emerging issues to OFAs Policy Advisory Council;
  • Provide information and advice to OFA members on taxation policies and BRM programs through presenting at meetings, preparing fact sheets, posting website content, attending agricultural trade shows, and answering telephone enquiries;
  • Communicate and explain information and concerns regarding BRM programs and tax policies from an OFA perspective to a range of audiences;
  • Review and edit content of draft OFA news releases, commentaries and print advertisements;
  • Prepare letters and submissions outlining OFA policy positions to both federal and provincial government officials; and
  • Serve on technical committees related to BRM programs and property tax issues.

Qualifications: In order to perform this role, the following qualifications are needed:

  • Bachelors degree in agricultural business, economics, statistics or a related field, or equivalent experience;
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated research, analysis and problem-solving skills;
  • Knowledge of agricultural programs and policy initiatives in Ontario;
  • General knowledge of Ontario agricultural production;
  • Familiarity with issues facing Ontario farmers and rural communities;
  • Demonstrated understanding of policy decision-making processes;
  • Ability to set, manage and adjust competing priorities to meet tight timelines;
  • A valid drivers license is required, and
  • Bilingualism (English and French) would be considered an asset but is not a requirement for this position.
